I've been looking into hiving MP3/WMA/WAV available from multiple locations in the house. This page gives links to various products and articles on the subject.
The SliMP3 player is an open source(ish) product that connects via Ehternet.

Audiotron is similar in concept to SliMP3 player but is a more black box approach and a bit more expensive!
